Summer school “the magnificent world of the upcycled materials” for 7 to 12-year-olds.

TransfoLAB BCN proposes a different way to spend the summer, filled with materials and making. Every week we will work with a different material and will learn the different techniques of transformation so that we can produce different products. During the learning process the focus will be on creative recycling and reuse. Every Tuesday we will visit MaterFad: Barcelona’s Center for Materials, part of Disseny Hub, so that we can investigate the new applications of the chosen material. Every Thursday we will visit an artist/maker in their workshop. At the end of each week we will have completed an object to take home and we will celebrate with a small exhibition. We will work in a small group so that we can ensure the maximum attention and safety.

During the first week we will discover everything about wood. We will start with the characteristics of wood and how to differentiate between the different types. Also, we will talk about the different wood derivatives and their level of environmental sustainability and recyclability.  We will learn how to use some basic tools, and a few not so basic, and we will try different techniques to transform the wood. Furthermore, we will touch upon the digital technologies and visit a center where we can learn the difference between Computer Numerical Control (CNC) cutting and laser cutting. During our work in the workshop we will have the opportunity to produce our own product, utilizing the different techniques we have learned.

Wood 29.06 – 03.07.2020

The bicycle is a very used way of transport in Barcelona, and above everything very important towards achieving a sustainable lifestyle. Therefore, during the second week we will investigate from up-close the different parts that make a bicycle and will analyze what can be done with them once they reach the end of their usable life. The idea is to familiarize with the notion of reuse and creative upcycling, and to understand what a life cycle of a product is. We will learn which techniques we can use to transform objects that have reached the end of the life cycle and give them a new life. We will visit a space dedicated to the world of bicycles. And during the work in the workshop we will make our own designs from discarded bicycle parts.

Bicycles 06.07 – 10.07.2020

Although plastic materials are among the most frequently found in our surrounding, they are the least environmentally sustainable. And we will dedicate the third week to them. We will talk about plastic derivatives, where do they come from and why are they so dangerous for the environment. We will not only learn how we can reduce using them, but also how to recycle and reuse the ones that have already been generated. We will visit a studio that produces their products from discarded plastic through an injection process, and we will get familiar with the Precious plastics project. At the same time, we will get introduced to another digital technology, 3D printing. At the workshop, we will investigate the different ways we can transform plastic and we will have a chance to 3D print a few small examples.

Plastic 13.07 – 17.07.2020

During the fourth week we will enter the magical world of glass. We will talk about the various types of glass and the variety of their use. We will analyze the environmental sustainability of glass and will learn of the different ways we can recycle and reuse it.  We will talk about Gaudi and the technique of “trencadís”, and how this can be done with reclaimed glass. During our visit we will learn how to work on glass and what does glass blowing mean. And finally, at the workshop we will use glass from discarded bottles to make our own mosaics.

Glass 20.07 – 24.07.2020

We all use paints and colors in our lives, for different purposes and in different ways. Consequently, this final week will be focused on natural paints, how they can be made and where they can be used. We will learn what it means to apply a finish, and how to acquire it; what type of natural oils can be found and how they can be used. Furthermore, we will work with the different techniques of “marbling” and we will apply them to various surfaces. We will visit an artistic space and will discover what it means to paint with the light. Finally, we will practice some of these techniques painting one of the finished products in the previous weeks or another object.
